The Fortress of Agios Nikolaos, named after Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, stands proudly at the tip of the port, greeting visitors with its robust, circular walls. This fortress was built during the time of the Knights of St. John, who were instrumental in shaping much of the island’s medieval history. Construction began in 1464 under the Grand Master Zacosta and was completed in 1467. This was the time when the island was an integral part of the defense system against the Ottoman Empire
